These two plants represent Hassan and Amir and how religion affects their roles in society. Amir is a cherry blossom tree, while Hassan is a bush. Like both plants, they both grew up in the same place and under the same circumstances. Yet, one has more power and more room to prosper (and to blossom). However, Hassan is a Hazara, and he doesn't have the ability to grow, and society is pushing him to stay working as a servant. Even though Baba was both of their fathers, their religions cause them to lead completely different lifestyles. The differences in religion also affect serious relationships by making one superior to another. Both plants have different looks also. The cherry blossom tree is admired more than the bushes get. This shows that Amir and his lifestyle is more acceptable and wanted, while Hassan is looked down upon and shamed.
I really like how you talked about religion and culture because even if they have the same father, they lived different life experiences because of their culture. It is interesting that even though Hassan is looked down upon, he still is more hopeful about the future. Great insight!
ReplyDeleteI thought your comparison of Hassan and Amir to the cherry blossom tree and bush was really creative. The shade that the cherry blossom tree provides to the bush also demonstrates how Amir constantly put down Hassan and looked down on him.
ReplyDeleteNice job comparing Amir and Hassan using the metaphor of a cherry blossom and a bush! I think the metaphor and the book have many similarities, as you have outlined although they are given the same nutrients and the same environment, they are different, all because of what type of plant they are. This really demonstrates the cultural and religious divide between Pashtuns and Hazaras, from the plants' differences in outward appearance, size, and treatment. Very perceptive!
ReplyDeleteI think this is a really creative metaphor for Amir and Hassan because you take into account both the plants themselves and their surroundings, relating both back to a comparison between the two characters. I think this image could also demonstrate how Hassan still managed to grow in some aspects and become a more mature and capable person than Amir in childhood because the plant is still alive and able to grow despite its conditions.
