Open the car door and
take a deep breath;
You’re finally here.
Round the corner of the
rickety, rust-red boathouse,
and the dazzling light of the summer sunset
ricochets off the dancing water before your eyes.
The dancing water picks up its pace,
swirling out towards distant banks
garlanded with greenery
as the boat glides gently through the evening air.
Approach the starting line and
Ready, Set, Go.
Hair flying,
all tangled and twisted with the wind that fills your ears.
When the wild wind and the wild pounding
of your racing heart slow,
so does the world.
And that’s when you look around and
Notice.
Notice the finch’s soothing song rising from the trees
Notice the forest green wooden panels peeking out of the fronds
Notice the delicate aroma of pine drifting on the breeze
Notice the beautiful simplicity of nature that corresponds
with life on the lake.
Simplicity is beauty
At least that’s what the eerie, lonesome call of dusk tells me
as the water becomes a glassy mirror
and the world slows to a stop.
That’s when simplicity is beauty.
