For My Mom

When we are little,
Our Mother is everything.
She can build walls
Tall enough to protect us from any danger,
She can fight off the dragons in the sky,
And she can save us
from the monster under our bed.

My mom has the most beautiful eyes,
A color that no one can pinpoint.
They're blue,
When they reflect the endless ocean.
The white mist and turquoise swirls
Melting into her eyes.
Rolling around like blue marbles.
They’re green,
Under the vibrant forest canopy,
And within the luscious leaves.
Pierced by the yellow sun,
Like a knife,
Slicing through the colors.

Our connection is supercharged,
Free falling electricity that catches
Onto one of us and bursts into bolts.
The electricity that powers our days,
Love and life.

But when this connection is severed,
Like a dropped phone call there is only a loud
hummmm.
A cave of echoing emptiness on the other side.
Solitude.

Mamma is a companion
Through the beginning and to the end.
Making our bond
Unbreakable.

  1. I loved this poem! My favorite aspect was that the second stanza because you used beautiful imagery and descriptions. My favorite line was, "A cave of echoing emptiness on the other side. Solitude." Great job!!

  2. I really liked your stanza about the colors of your mother's eyes. I think that the repetition and enjambment really help to bring emphasis to what you are saying and paints a great picture.

  3. What a sweet poem! I loved how well you integrated metaphors and similes into this poem to paint a picture into the readers mind. The imagery is great! I also like how (I'm not sure if this was intentional) but it seemed like as the poem was young, the metaphors were more childish like with the dragons but as the poem progressed, it got deeper and more nuanced. It added a very nice touch of maturity!
