Lemons

To people who blame life
For giving us sour lemons,
Life does not give us sour lemons.
Life gives us lemon trees, which we can pick to make lemonade.
But like the lemon scented candles and lemon flavored candy,
The truly sour lemons in life are only
Man-made.

To people who complain
About the difficulties of life,
Who are not satisfied solely with the sweet sugar they have,
Who are only prideful of all the lemons they have,
Who tell everyone that they have to have both to make lemonade,
Sadness has now become a given and
Happiness
A burden.

To people who announce
That their life is like a lemon,
Sour, hard, and full of separate pieces,
Talking frequently of the miserable moments in their lives,
Moments so small, so trivial that they can
Fit on the tips of their tongues but never
Stay on the tips of their tongues for long.
Why hold on to these moments for long
When there are much better ways
To enjoy the sweet moments of life
Than with
A sour fruit.

  1. I love how you alluded to the adage "when life gives you lemons you make lemonade" without stating it outright. I also like how you ended the second stanza, and I also like how all of your stanzas end in shorter, choppier lines.

  2. I really enjoy your metaphors and focus on the larger picture. By using a simple phrase, you were able to craft a whole poem that demonstrates how it is a multifaceted phrase. My favorite line is "The truly sour lemons in life are only Man-made". I think that your whole piece has a very interesting message which is very universal and can apply to most, if not, all people.

  3. Your repetition of "to the" and variations puts nice emphasis on your words which gives your poem a cool vibe.
