The Relationship Between Sohrab and Amir

In this image, there are two plants separated by a rock. The bigger plant is Amir; old, yellowing, and damaged, while the smaller one is Sohran, healthy on the outside, but with dying roots that cannot be seen. This represents Amir’s obvious physical injures, and Sohrab’s invisible, psychological injuries. The rock itself represents Amir and Sohrab’s disconnection. The bigger plant is trying to grow over the rock, which shows how despite his injuries, Amir is trying to make Sohrab feel welcomed and appreciated. The smaller one is growing inwards, and the rock shows how Sohrab is separated from Amir by a seemingly permanent barrier. Despite the barrier, the two plants are still connected through the ground, which represents how their memories of Hassan still unites them. It is less obvious than the rock, but it is there regardless of Amir and Sohrab’s troubles. Through Hassan, they can form a connection.

  1. I like the connection between the plant growing over the rock and Amir trying to make Sohrab feel welcomed and appreciated. I also think that the proximity of the two plants show how despite the separation between them, there is still the chance for their relationship to grow

  2. I like the metaphor of Amir and Sohrab as plants, connected through their shared childhood roots and I think your analysis of Sohrab is accurate. The rock could also represent what the two of them have had to overcome as their past traumas is primarily what keeps them from fully uniting.
